Forno di Zoldo

The Municipality of Forno di Zoldo: History and Geography

Hello everyone! Today I'll be talking about Forno di Zoldo, a small municipality in the province of Belluno, Veneto, which in 2016 merged with Zoldo Alto to form the new municipality of Val di Zoldo.

Forno di Zoldo is located at the beginning of the Val di Zoldo, and spreads over the two banks of the Maè torrent. The town is divided into two parts by the watercourse: Forno di Qua, on the left, and Forno di Là, on the right.

The History of Forno di Zoldo

The name of the town derives from the presence of ovens and forges for working iron, powered by the waters of the Maè and its tributaries. In the 14th century, there was already an oven that worked the pyrite from Vall'Inferna. During the period of the Serenissima Republic, Forno became the administrative capital of Zoldo, and was the seat of the eponymous rural municipality. In 1907, the town received the Gold Medal as a "Meritorious City of the National Resurgence".

Symbols and Honors

The coat of arms of Forno di Zoldo was "azure, an anvil bearing a hammer placed in fess and supported by a tree trunk, all natural", while the gonfalon was a green banner. In 1907, the town received the Gold Medal as a "Meritorious City of the National Resurgence".

Monuments and Places of Interest

Forno di Zoldo offers several tourist attractions, including the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, located at the western end of Forno di Qua. The church, already existing before 1454, was enlarged and restored in 1619 and underwent a drastic renovation in the twentieth century following World War I.

Forno di Zoldo has been an important municipality for Val di Zoldo and the history of Veneto. A place to visit if you travel in the area to discover local culture and tradition. Thanks for reading my friendly summary!
