Forni Avoltri: The Tradition of Mountain Life in Carnia

History

The origins of the two hamlets of Forni and Avoltri are closely linked to the mines present in the area. In fact, the forni, from which the town takes its name, are the ones where the minerals extracted from Mount Avanza were melted, while Avoltri would constitute the first settlement of the people who worked there. The first certain testimony of the existence of this mining activity, and therefore of the town, dates back to a document from 1328. The town has followed the historical events of Friuli, from the domination of the Patriarchate of Aquileia to the passage to the Republic of Venice in 1420.

In 1508 the town was sacked by the Lansquenets, and then annexed to the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1866, the year of annexation to the Kingdom of Italy.

Forni Avoltri is a town rich in history, nature and traditions. Among the most important monuments are the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, dating back to the 18th century, and the church of Sant'Antonio Abate, which preserves frescoes from the 16th century.
