Discovering Formia: a city between sea and mountains

Hello everyone! Today I'll talk to you about Formia, a wonderful Italian municipality located in the province of Latina, in Lazio. With its 37,208 inhabitants, Formia is a city between sea and mountains, where the views from both the coast and the countryside are truly breathtaking.

Physical geography

Formia: a city to discover between the sea and the mountains.

Territory

The municipal territory of Formia stretches between the Aurunci mountains of the Lazio Anti-Apennines and the coast of the Gulf of Gaeta. The most famous beaches are those of Vindicio and Gianola, but there are many others worth visiting.

Climate

The position of Formia on the sea and the presence of hills behind it give the city a favorable and enviable climate. The famous epigram of Marco Valerio Marziale that proclaims: "O temperate dulce Formiae litus..." is not just a poetic image, but a reality. It is no coincidence that Air Force General Edmondo Bernacca referred to it as a "natural tepidarium." The climate of Formia is decidedly maritime with not particularly harsh winters.

Origins of the name

The name "Formia" could derive from the Greek "Hormiae," meaning "landing place," referring to the tranquility of the shelter provided by the gulf. Another hypothesis is that the name may come from the Latin "formus," meaning "hot," which in turn would refer directly to an Indo-European root.

History

The city of Formia has ancient origins. It first appeared in history during the Latin War of 338 BC when the Appian Way passed through here. But Formia is also linked to mythology, handed down over the centuries by the stories of Ulysses, the Trojan War, and the mythical Laestrygonians, described by Pliny the Elder in his work "Naturalis Historia."
