Forino: millennial nature and history in Campania

History

Forino has a long history that begins in the pre-Roman era with sporadic findings in the territory. Later, the village was part of the Roman colony of "Venera Livia Abellinatum" and was characterized by the presence of constructions attributable to a Roman villa. The area was affected by the passage of the great Roman aqueduct called Claudio "Fontis Augustei Acquaeductus". Here, the aqueduct developed in a gallery; its construction must have lasted several years. This led to stable settlements in the basin by various groups of slaves and officials in charge of directing the works, giving impetus to the formation of the "locus Forini".

Forino was also affected by the crossing of various invading peoples, such as Byzantines and Lombards. In 663, a great battle was fought in Forino between the Byzantines led by Saburro and the Lombard troops of the Duke and Prince of Benevento, Romualdo I of Benevento, which resulted in the victory of the latter.

In the Middle Ages, Forino was owned by the Francisio, Hobemburg, Monfort, Orsini, Cicinello, and Cecere families until, in 1604, the fief was bought by the Caracciolo family, who held the domain until the cessation of feudalism. In that year, the Royal authority elevated the land of Forino to the title of principality and Ottavio Caracciolo to the first Prince of Forino.

Symbols

The coat of arms and flag of the municipality of Forino were granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 2017. The coat of arms depicts a shield supported by two laurel branches and with a crowned two-headed eagle in the center, symbol of the Roman Empire. The flag features the colors white and blue, the colors of the Virgin Mary, patron of Forino along with Saint Nicholas of Myra, protector of the village.
