Fordongianus Roman Baths: a Unique Discovery in Sardinia

Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about an incredible place that I discovered during my visit to Sardinia: the Roman Baths of Fordongianus. It is an archaeological site located on the left bank of the Tirso River, near the town of Fordongianus. The baths are famous for their thermal springs that flow at a temperature of 54°C.

The History and Evolution of the Fordongianus Baths

The Fordongianus Baths have a rich and ancient history. They were first mentioned by geographer Claudius Ptolemy in his "Geography" around 170 AD under the name "Aquae Ypsitanae". Later, in the "Antonini Itinerarium", they are referred to as "Forum Traiani" during the reign of Emperor Trajan. During this period, the city went from being a colony to a city with municipal status.

The Fordongianus thermal complex consists of two establishments: an older one dating back to the 1st century AD and a later one dating back to the 3rd century AD. The two establishments differ in construction technique, but both used the thermal water from the surrounding springs.

The first building, built with the "opus quadratum" technique, develops around the large natatio, a rectangular pool measuring 13 m by 6.5 by 1.5 meters deep. The hot spring water was introduced into the pool through a temperature regulation system. The building was also equipped with a portico supported by pillars made of volcanic rock.

The second establishment, built in "opus caementicium" with a facing of "opus vittatum mixtum", featured different rooms and a floor decorated with a mosaic with tesserae measuring 1.8 by 2.5 cm. Over time, the mosaic flooring was covered with a layer of cocciopesto.

The structures of the baths: from the natatio to the nymph pool

The natatio is the main structure of the first building of the baths. It is a rectangular pool that runs along the two longest sides and was surrounded by a portico. The pool was used for bathing and relaxation, and the hot spring water was introduced into the pool through a temperature regulation system.

Near the natatio, other smaller pools can also be observed, including the nymph pool, a pool dedicated to the worship of nymphs. This pool was dedicated to the nymphs, as evidenced by the finding of an inscription dedicated to them.

The Cultural and Touristic Importance of the Fordongianus Baths

The Fordongianus Baths are an important archaeological and cultural site in Sardinia. Currently, the baths are open to visitors and have become an increasingly popular tourist destination in recent years. The beauty and uniqueness of the baths, combined with their magnificence and millenary history, make the Fordongianus Baths an unmissable destination for anyone who wants to discover the history and culture of Sardinia.

I was enchanted by the Fordongianus Baths and I highly recommend everyone to visit them. You won't regret it!
