Forcola
Discovering the Municipality of Forcola
Hello friends, today I will talk about the Municipality of Forcola, located in the province of Sondrio in Lombardy. Forcola is a scattered municipality with a population of about 765 inhabitants, the main inhabited centers that make it up are Sirta, where the municipal headquarters is located, and Selvetta.
Physical geography
Forcola extends at the gateway to the middle Valtellina, between the Val Tartano and the Val Madre, on the Orobie Mountains. The main inhabited centers are located near the Adda river and are easily reachable from the main road. The smaller nuclei, on the other hand, are located on the mountain and are connected to the valley floor by paths and mule tracks.
History
The first evidence of dwellings at mid-altitude in the Forcola area dates back to 1323. The first inhabited centers at the valley floor date back instead to the mid-19th century, when the Austrians carried out a project to reclaim the territories adjacent to the Adda river. In 2017, a great tragedy struck the forest above the fraction of Sirta, which was devastated by a powerful fire.
Symbols
Forcola's coat of arms and flag were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on March 29, 1995.
Monuments and places of interest
Religious architecture
Among the places of interest in Forcola we find the parish church of San Giuseppe in Sirta, designed by the engineer Clemente Valenti di Talamona, started in 1877 and completed in 1896. Instead, the church of San Carlo Borromeo in Selvetta is of recent construction.
Society
Demographic evolution
The demographic evolution of Forcola has undergone variations over the years due to the scattering of inhabited centers. However, the population has maintained a certain stability with a slight growth in the period 1991-2011.
Administration
The Municipality of Forcola is governed by Mayor Marco Valli and his municipal council.
