Fontegreca
Welcome to Fontegreca, a Campanian municipality rich in history
Welcome to the municipality of Fontegreca, located in the province of Caserta in Campania. This small city is home to just 759 people, but has a great history. Its original name was Fossaceca, and it was populated by the Osci and later by the Samnites. During the Lombard period, the area was chosen as the highest and best defended point. In the Norman era, it was a fiefdom of Guglielmo di Fossa Ceca.
A complex history
Fontegreca has a long and complicated history. In the feudal era, the city was donated to the Church and was part of the San Vincenzo al Volturno monastery. It was later donated to the widow of Count Ranulfo II of Alife, who then donated the city to Montecassino.
In 1269, Fontegreca, together with other municipalities such as Capriati a Volturno, Ciorlano, and Pratella, was part of the Baronia di Prata. After the unification of Italy in 1862, the Municipal Council decided to change the name of the city to Fontegreca. The first part of the new name, "Fonte", comes from a source of fresh water, while the second part, "greca", comes from ancient private and public manuscripts that cited the Municipality as Fossa Graeca.
During World War II, Fontegreca experienced dramatic days due to requisitions, roundups, and forced population flight to the mountains of Gallo Matese. The Germans also installed their command in Palazzo Parrillo. On October 28, 1943, the Americans occupied Valle Agricola, and on November 1, 1943, they entered the town of Fontegreca.
