Fonte Nuova

The District of Fonte Nuova: Let's discover together the history and treasures of this municipality in the metropolitan city of Rome Capital.

Welcome to Fonte Nuova

Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about a municipality that is as ancient as it is modern: Fonte Nuova.

Physical geography

The Pratolungo, a small tributary of the Aniene, flows through the territory of Fonte Nuova. Thanks to its mild climate, temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees Celsius in the summer.

Fonte Nuova: history, treasures and nature in Rome.

History

Fonte Nuova was built on the ruins of the ancient Nomentum, which was already a city in the Latin League, renowned for its climate and named by classical poets such as Ovid. Here, in 799, Charles, King of the Franks, met the Pope to agree on the birth of the Holy Roman Empire the following year. The battle between Garibaldi's volunteers and the French and Papal troops took place in 1867 in Fonte Nuova, and the bones of some Garibaldi soldiers who fell in the clashes are still preserved in the area between the current municipalities of Mentana and Fonte Nuova.

Symbols

The emblem of the Municipality of Fonte Nuova was granted by decree of the President of the Republic on June 8th, 2007, and the gonfalone is a yellow banner.

Monuments and places of interest

If you are passionate about religious architecture, Fonte Nuova offers many wonders to visit, such as the Church of Gesù Maestro, which was consecrated in 1967 and restored and expanded in 2000, or the Church of Santa Lucia, whose construction began in 1964 and was consecrated in 1972. There are also the Church of Maria Regina, whose construction began in 1983 and the modern-style Pentecostal Evangelical Church of the 1970s-1980s. If you are instead a lover of military architecture, I recommend admiring the Tricolour Tower, so called for its colouring, restored in the 1970s and of medieval origin.
