Exploring Treviso: Physical Geography

Treviso is an Italian municipality located in the province of Treviso in Veneto, with a population of about 84,613 inhabitants. As the largest municipality in the province by population and the fifth in the entire Veneto region, the city has an urban area of about 200,000 inhabitants. The city is located about 30 km from the capital Venice, forging a close connection between the two cities through the centuries. Together with Padua, Treviso forms the metropolitan area known as PaTreVe, which has a total population of about 2.7 million.

The city of Treviso is protected by three hills near the Sile River, in an area where the presence of different springs has made it an important commercial center since ancient times.

Territory

Treviso is located on the Venetian-Friulian plain, an area rich in water resources that provide numerous springs, locally called "fontanassi". Among the different springs in the municipal territory, the Botteniga is the most important watercourse. After receiving the waters of Pegorile and Piavesella di Nervesa, the Botteniga crosses the Walls of Treviso at the Ponte de Pria and then divides into different branches, known as "cagnani" such as the Cagnan Grande, the Canale dei Buranelli, and the Cagnan della Roggia, which distinguish the historic center.

Another notable spring watercourse is the Cantarane, which is entirely located within the walls. However, the main watercourse is the Sile, which after skirting the Walls of Treviso, receives the waters of the "cagnani" of the Botteniga. Other tributary rivers of the Sile are the Storga, Limbraga (from the left), and the Dosson (from the right).

The city is located on a terrain composed of sandy-loamy materials. The distribution of the various stratigraphic levels of the terrain is very irregular due to the frequent deviations and variations in course undergone by the rivers during the last geological era.

The altitude of the city ranges from 6 to 31 meters above sea level, while the town hall, Ca' Sugana, is located 15 meters above the same level. Treviso is located in zone 3, which is low seismicity.

Physical geography of Treviso: between resurgence and plain.

Climate

The climate of Treviso is subcontinental, similar to the Padano-Veneta plain, with several microclimatic variations. Winters are moderately cold, with average temperatures below zero in winter months. Summers are hot and humid.

In conclusion, Treviso, one of the main cities in Veneto, is located in an area rich in water resources and springs. These waters have made the city an important commercial center since ancient times. The climate of Treviso is typically subcontinental, with cold winters and hot and humid summers.
