Canale
Canale: a fraction of Fontanigorda
Hello friends! Today I want to talk to you about a very interesting fraction of the municipality of Fontanigorda called "Canale". It is located at about 780 meters above sea level on the right bank of the Trebbia River, and is a very ancient historical area that has maintained its authenticity over the centuries.
History of Canale
The origin of the name "Canale" is not known for certain, some say it derives from the term "rosehip", while others think it is simply "ca 'nà", which means "our house". There are documents from 1523 that talk about the Church of Santa Giustina (Fontanigorda) and we can suppose that Canale already existed at that time, but most likely the first communities date back to an even earlier period.
Today there are about a hundred houses (many uninhabited in winter) and the parish also includes other places such as Reisoni, Casone di Canale, Volpaie, Borzine and Due Ponti. The four historic families of Canale are: Biggi, Ferretti, Sciutti and Barbieri, and the symbol of Canale is the rosehip, a flower that was once very widespread in the surrounding meadows of the village.
