Fondo

Greetings from Fondo: a brief guide to its monuments and places of interest

Hello everyone! Today we'll be talking about Fondo, a municipality located in the autonomous province of Trento in Trentino-Alto Adige. Firstly, it's important to note that on January 1st, 2020, Fondo merged with the municipalities of Castelfondo and Malosco to form the new municipality of Borgo d'Anaunia, although we'll discuss this more later on.

History

Fondo has a rich and ancient history and has been an important territory for various regions. In 1947, a few territories were detached from Fondo to reconstitute the municipalities of Malosco, San Felice, and Senale.

Journey in depth: between art, nature and events.

Monuments and Places of Interest

But let's get down to business. What can you see in Fondo? Firstly, there are several artistic churches to visit such as the Church of San Martino, the Church of Santa Lucia, and the Church of San Rocco. But that's not all: Palanaunia is an events space that regularly hosts various activities. In 2009, it hosted "Depero alla ribalta!" - an exhibition organized by Gabriella Belli dedicated to Fortunato Depero who was born in Fondo in 1892. The exhibition was organized in collaboration with the Mart, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto. Lastly, you cannot miss out on the astronomical hydrometer which was designed by the watchmakers Zanoni and handmade by the master watchmaker Alberto Gorla, located in the historic centre.

Nature

Fondo isn't just about art and culture - nature is also prominent here with the Rio Sass Canyon, a gorge that stretches for 300 metres and is 60 metres deep with rocks and thin waterfalls. There's also the Lago Smeraldo, a small artificial lake that offers a romantic and picturesque landscape.

Events

If you decide to visit Fondo, don't miss out on two particularly interesting events: La Ciaspolada - an international snowshoe race that takes place every year on Epiphany day, and the "Cosina Nonesa en ti Somasi da Fon" - a gastronomic-cultural event held on the second weekend of August.

Economy

As for the economy of Fondo, traditional wood crafting for furniture and fittings is still widespread and well-known.

Infrastructure and Transportation

For those who need to reach Fondo from other localities, you can use the state roads. The Strada statale 238 delle Palade and the Strada statale 42 del Tonale and della Mendola intersect here.

With that being said, we hope we have made you fall in love with Fondo - a distinctive place full of culture, nature, and exciting events. Happy travels!
