If you are looking for a small village with historical charm, Retegno could be very interesting for you. This village is located in the territory of the municipality of Fombio, in the province of Lodi, and is the only hamlet present. Let's discover together the history and origins of this picturesque place!

Origin of the name

Retegno, or otherwise called Artegn in the local dialect, has a very particular name, which has origins related to the activities carried out in the territory. There are two hypotheses that explain the origin of the name. The first refers to the nets used by the fishermen of the Po River, who spread these nets to dry in the lands of Retegno. The second hypothesis instead is linked to the presence of the mint and the supposed parsimony of its administrators.

Retegno: history and secrets of a village in Lodi

History

The Imperial Barony of Retegno and Bettola was established on January 2, 1654 with an imperial diploma granted by Ferdinand III of Habsburg. This diploma guaranteed Cardinal Teodoro Trivulzio the privilege of managing the local mint, coining silver coins worth half a Filippo. Due to their fine workmanship, the coins minted in the mint of Retegno can be compared to those of the Visconti of Milan and the Gonzaga of Mantua. Minting continued until the 18th century and there were many other coins minted, such as the Hungarian, derived from the florin.

The barony remained autonomous despite changes in ownership following the extinction of the Trivulzio and the subsequent transaction of the Gallio di Como. The fiefdom returned to the Milanese state in 1768 with the extinction of the last family that owned it.
