Discovering Tivegna

Tivegna is a small hamlet with only 243 inhabitants located in the municipality of Follo, in Liguria. Despite its small size, it is rich in history and traditions, kept alive over the centuries thanks to the passion and dedication of its inhabitants.

The village develops on a hill, with a typical compact structure of medieval villages, and is composed of several neighborhoods that have been preserved over the centuries, each characterized by particular peculiarities. Among them, we find the Castle, the Rocchetta, the Chiesuola, and the Borgata, just to name a few.

The history of Tivegna

Tivegna is one of the oldest villages in the municipality of Follo, whose first official citation dates back to 936 in the decrees of Emperor Otto I of Saxony. The village was under the jurisdiction of the Bishops of Luni until 1252 when it passed to Count Nicolò Fieschi.

Subsequently, under Genoese domination, Tivegna acquired greater importance in the 15th century and became an autonomous municipality, with its own statutes. During the time of the Ligurian Republic, the village became the capital of a canton under the jurisdiction of the Gulf of Venus.

The tradition of Tivegna

Tivegna is a village that has always kept its traditions alive and celebrates them with great enthusiasm. In particular, during the year, numerous festivals and events involving all the inhabitants of the village and visitors take place.

Among the main festivities are the traditional "Caminada" on April 25, which involves a walk through the old paths in the woods to reach a different village among those nearby and have lunch together at one of the many accommodation facilities in the area. On May 1, Labor Day, the men in the village cut down one of the most beautiful pines in the surrounding woods to erect it in the square of the village or near a fellow villager's house. At the end of May, the pine (called "er Mazo") is cut into pieces and offered as firewood, accompanied by a refreshment of fava beans, salami, pecorino cheese, focaccia, and local wine.

On July 2, the Holy Mass is celebrated in the parish of the church dedicated to the "Madonna dell'Orto", coinciding with the Palio di Siena. Finally, on August 10, the celebrations of the Patron Saint, San Lorenzo Martire, take place with Holy Mass, Vespers, and a suggestive procession along the streets of the village, with the statue of the saint carried on the shoulders of the men in the village.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Tivegna is a small village but with a great personality, thanks to its history and traditions, its natural beauty, and its events. Anyone who wants to visit it will certainly find much to discover and appreciate, among suggestive views, ancient churches, and breathtaking landscapes, but above all the affection and sympathy of the locals.
