Discovering Sorbolo, a hamlet of the municipality of Follo
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Sorbolo, a lovely hamlet of the municipality of Follo, located in the lower Val di Vara, in Liguria. The toponym "Sorbolo" refers to the typical fruit of the woods: the Sorbus.
History of Sorbolo
According to some historical sources, Sorbolo was a branch of the ancient parish of San Vittore. In 1480, the municipality of Beverino complained about the harassment received from the neighboring villages, including "et quod destabilius homines Tivegne et Sorbi", that is, the citizens of Sorbolo. During the Napoleonic Age in Italy (precisely in 1803), Sorbolo had 138 inhabitants.
Behind the hamlet is Mount Santa Croce, on whose peak there was a church that had three entrances, corresponding to the three communities from which it had been built (Sorbolo, Polverara - Riccò del Golfo di Spezia - and Carnea). Among the attractions of the hamlet is the parish church of San Lorenzo, dating back to the seventeenth century.
Festivities of Sorbolo
If you are in Sorbolo in summer, you can participate in the two main festivals of the hamlet. The patron saint festival of San Lorenzo is celebrated on August 10, while the festival of Santa Maria del Carmine is celebrated on August 16.
