Carnea

Welcome to Carnea!

Hi everyone! Today I'm going to talk to you about Carnea, a delightful hamlet of the municipality of Follo, in the province of La Spezia. This little village is situated on a hill between the Piaggia and Marzana streams, in a side valley of the Durasca Valley.

History

The medieval town of Carnea has its roots in medieval times, although it is not entirely clear what its original function was. Initially, it was under the jurisdiction of the Castle of Polverara, and later passed under the administration of the Castle of Tivegna. If you travel to the town, you will notice that the upper part is called "Torre," but there are no military architectures to be found. The first written testimony, dating back to August 17, 1188, is found in the Pelavicino Code, which describes the organization of families of the cooks of the diocese of Luni Pietro (bishop of Luni).

Over the centuries, Carnea continued to evolve, until the parish church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary Assumed into Heaven was built in 1686. Before that date, the Church of Our Lady of the Olive served as the parish church.

Access to the village

The only way to access Carnea by car is through a road that runs along the valley and connects the town to the SP 15 of the Durasca Valley. But Carnea is also accessible on foot via several paths, including one that connects it to the hamlet of Sorbolo.

Society

Traditions and Folklore

Like many Italian hamlets, Carnea has its own festivals and local traditions. Among the most suggestive festivals is the Frittelle di Baccalà Festival, which takes place every second Sunday of September. It's not just the baccalà fritter that makes an appearance during this festival, but also all the other delicacies of traditional cuisine, carefully prepared by the families of the town.

Curiosities

If you visit Carnea, you'll discover some interesting curiosities. For example, this town is the seat of the only Proloco recognized in the municipality of Follo. In addition, the aqueduct that brings water into the houses of the town is owned by the citizens, and the management of the water supply is carried out through the Carnea Aqueduct Consortium.

Notes

Although it is a small town, Carnea has a fascinating history and a warm heart. If you are looking for a peaceful place to relax and eat well, the Frittelle di Baccalà Festival is an occasion not to be missed!
