The church of Martino di Tours in Bastremoli: a hidden gem in La Spezia

Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about the church of Martino di Tours, a small hidden gem in the village of Bastremoli in the municipality of Follo, in the province of La Spezia. This Catholic church is the seat of the parish of the same name in the diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato. I will take you on a journey to discover its history and architecture, sharing with you all the most interesting details.

History and description

The church of Martino di Tours was rebuilt in the eighteenth century on the remains of a pre-existing twelfth-century building. The church houses three important paintings: 'The Assumption', 'The Annunciation' and 'The Madonna with Child', all dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Initially, this church was part of the parish of San Leonardo in Follo, but in 1838 it was elevated to an independent parish.

Let us tell you an anecdote! The first historical mention of this church concerns Don Leonardo, parish priest from 1561 to 1565. We do not know much about him, but we do know he was an important figure for the parish.

The church was officially consecrated by the bishop of the diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato, Giovanni Battista Salvago, on June 18, 1632, and since then has played an important role in the local religious community.
