The History of Spezia Calcio

Hello football fans! Today I want to talk about my favorite club, Spezia Calcio. The team was founded in 1906, when a group of Swiss people created the football section of the Sport Club Spezia. Over the years, the team underwent various reorganizations until becoming the Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Spezia Calcio 2008.

From Origins to the 1930s

Francesco Corio was the first president of Spezia, while Alberto Picco was the captain and first scorer in the team's history, who fell heroically during World War I. In 1919, after the end of the war, the team joined the regular championship organized by the Federation, and in the 1919-1920 Promotion season, they won the Ligurian group of the Promotion Championship, thus accessing the First Category. During that period, the celestial jersey was replaced with the white one in honor of Football Club Pro Vercelli 1892, a prominent team at the national level. In 1920-1921, the team made its debut in the top league with a third-place finish in the First Category behind Inter and Pro Vercelli.

The History of Spezia Calcio: from its origins to Serie A.

From the 1940s to the 1970s

At the end of World War II, Spezia won the National Division 1944 thanks to the Gruppo Sportivo 42º Corpo dei Vigili del Fuoco 1943-1944, a club affiliated with it. This success was officially recognized by the FIGC as an "honorary" title in 2002. Nonetheless, most of its history unfolded between the second and third tiers, managing to reach the highest single league only in 2020.

In the 1970s, the team experienced a negative phase, relegating to Serie D. Later, thanks to the guidance of coach Armando Picchi, Spezia managed to win the Serie D 1973-1974 championship and climb back to Serie C.

From the 1980s to the 2000s

In the 1980s, the team experienced a fluctuating period, alternating between promotions and relegations between Serie C1 and Serie C2. In the 1990s, after the revival of the Associazione Calcio Spezia, the team achieved good results in Serie C1 but failed to reach Serie B.

In the 2000s, the team experienced a period of ups and downs, culminating in relegation to Serie C2 in 2006-2007 and the subsequent end of the Associazione Calcio Spezia.

The new revival and the rise towards Serie A

In 2008, the team was revived as Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Spezia Calcio 2008 and started playing in Eccellenza Liguria. In 2009-2010, the team was promoted to Serie D, where it started winning and climbing up the categories every year. In 2016-2017, the team was promoted to Serie B after winning the Serie C championship.

In 2020, the team reached Serie A for the first time in its history, thanks to the fifth place in the 2019-2020 Serie B and the victory in the play-offs.

The Alberto Picco Stadium and social colors

Spezia plays its home matches at the Alberto Picco Stadium, named after the captain and scorer of the team who fell in war. The social colors of Spezia are white and black.

Conclusion

Spezia Calcio is a young team with deep historical roots, which has managed to climb back up after difficult years and reach the top Italian league. It is a team that has won the hearts of its fans and represents the city of La Spezia to the fullest. Forza Aquile!
