A small mountain village

Forcatura is a small mountain village located in the municipality of Foligno, in the province of Perugia. With a population of only 76 inhabitants, Forcatura enjoys a panoramic view of the Colfiorito oasis and is about 30 km from Foligno. In this section, the history of this village will be described.

History of Forcatura

The origins of Forcatura date back to the 10th century, when small settlements of shepherds settled along the ancient Via della Spina. From the 10th century until 1500, the inhabitants of Forcatura referred to the pieve of Popola. The oldest part of the village has a quadrangular layout of great urbanistic interest. Forcatura first appears in a document from 1098 listing all the assets that the Montaldo and Oderisio Counts sell to Dionisio, rector of the Church of Santa Croce in Sassovivo.

Earthquake and reconstruction

Forcatura was severely hit by the Umbria and Marche earthquake, which damaged almost all the houses. During the reconstruction, the inhabitants were accommodated in a small village of wooden houses. Today, many of the houses have been renovated and farmhouses have been developed to accommodate small groups of gastronomic tourists.

Economy and events

The economy of Forcatura is based on organic cultivation of red potatoes, lentils, chickpeas, wheat, spelt, and hay. Dairy cow breeding is being converted to breeding of selected veal and sheep.

Forcatura celebrates the feast of San Lorenzo on August 10th, in honor of the patron saint of the village. The festival includes group games and a renowned fair with local organic products.
