Fiamenga
Fiamenga: an ancient and charming village
Located in the municipality of Foligno, the village of Fiamenga is a small pearl of history immersed in the green Umbrian countryside. With its 439 inhabitants, Fiamenga is a true "continuum" with the outskirts of Foligno, enjoying a privileged position halfway between the inhabited centers of Foligno and Bevagna.
History of Fiamenga: from hydraulic reclamation to the Roman era
The ancient name of Fiamenga was Filecto or Filetto, whose meaning seems to be related to the reeds that abounded in this swampy area. As early as the High Middle Ages, however, the area of Fiamenga was subjected to repeated hydraulic reclamation that allowed the development of agricultural civilization. In addition, Roman presence in this area is attested by two well-preserved tombs, still visible today from the state road 316.
Economy and events
Fiamenga is famous in the Foligno area for the Sacred Representation of Good Friday, which involves about 250 actors and extras in period costume. The procession of penance was introduced by the then vicar economist of the parish in 1867 and takes place every year during Holy Week. But the celebrations do not stop here: in September, since 1979, the Grape Harvest Festival is held, with a museum exhibition of the ancient local peasant civilization.
Monuments and places of interest
The church of San Giovanni Evangelista is the main monument of Fiamenga, built between the 11th and 12th centuries on the ruins of an old church dedicated to San Giovanni Evangelista. Its current appearance was achieved following numerous restoration and embellishment interventions. The church was enlarged and rearranged over the centuries, assuming the current Latin cross configuration in the 18th century. The main external facade was built in 1913 with an adapted design inside.
A village where tradition blends with modernity
Fiamenga is a village that has been able to combine economic development with respect for traditions and history. Its central location, in fact, makes it a reference point for tourists and inhabitants of neighboring areas. Over the years, Fiamenga has expanded and modernized its structures to offer a better quality of life to its inhabitants, but has kept a watchful eye on preserving the historical aspect and ancient charm of the entire village.
In conclusion, Fiamenga represents an example of how the past and present can come together to create a welcoming and pleasant environment. An ideal tourist destination for those who want to spend a holiday immersed in nature and history, without sacrificing comfort and modernity.
