Colfiorito
Colfiorito: Landscape and climate
Colfiorito is a beautiful hamlet in Foligno, located 760 meters above sea level on a plateau of karstic and marshy origin. The territory of Colfiorito covers about 300 hectares and is one of the seven plateaus of Colfiorito. The plateau was formed by the drying out of seven lake basins, but only one still hosts a swamp where rare animal species can be found.
The climate in Colfiorito is somewhat harsher compared to other areas of Umbria. The average temperature in the coldest month, January, is +0.8 °C, while that of the hottest month, July, is +21.0 °C. In summer, temperatures can easily exceed 30 degrees. Snow appears about fifteen times a year in the village, and almost always with significant accumulations. On average, there are 83 days of frost per year.
Geology and seismology
The Colfiorito area is characterized by high seismic risk, as it is located on the Colfiorito-Campotosto Fault, the same fault that caused the Umbria-Marche earthquake in 1997. The tectonic crisis culminated in the magnitude 6.0 earthquake, which occurred at 11:40 am on September 26, 1997.
History
The area chosen to build Colfiorito was the site of ancient settlements. Near the current cemetery, there are 250 burial tombs, furnished with ceramics, iron weapons, and ornamental objects, some dating back to the 10th century BC. Not far away are the remains of an Iron Age village (9th century BC).
Village overview
Colfiorito has about 400 residents and is located on the State Road 77 of Val di Chienti, which connects Foligno to Civitanova Marche. In addition to the beautiful surrounding countryside, Colfiorito boasts several tourist attractions, such as the natural museum where many rare species that inhabit the plateau can be admired and the sanctuary of the Madonna of Colfiorito, built in the 17th century.
The village is an excellent location for itinerant tourism, for its natural beauties, historical attractions, and local offerings of Umbrian delicacies. Furthermore, every year there are several events that take place in the town center, such as the festival of polenta and sausage, and the mountain festival.
