Annifo
Hello friends! Today I will talk to you about Annifo, a beautiful hamlet of the municipality of Foligno in the province of Perugia. I will take you on a journey to discover this small community where history, nature, and religiosity merge perfectly.
Discovering Annifo
Annifo is located at 874 meters on the eastern plains of the Colfiorito plateau and can be reached along the road that connects the State Road 77 of the Val di Chienti to Nocera Umbra and the Flaminia. It is a municipal hamlet belonging to District no. 7 "Annifo - Colfiorito" and has about 244 inhabitants.
Annifo has a horseshoe shape and is divided into micro-neighborhoods with characteristic names such as ''lu Colle'', ''lu Castellu'', ''le Fosse'', ''la Villa'', ''la Cesola'', ''Coderone, Curucillu'' and ''la Moia''. Dominating the road that connects Colfiorito to Annifo is the imposing Mount Pennino, which reaches 1,560 meters.
The history of Annifo
The history of Annifo dates back to ancient times with the presence of civilizations such as the Umbrians who found refuge in this area and that can be admired today through the tombs and necropolis present in the region.
Annifo has always had a great importance in Roman Civilization, as evidenced by the surrounding places of the village. The name "Annifo" could derive from "Hannibal fuit" meaning "Hannibal passed by here" but in reality, the original name in the Umbrian language was "Nifu".
Furthermore, around the year 1000, some monasteries arose around Mount Pennino, including San Pietro di Landolina and in the twelfth century Foligno extended its borders to Annifo creating a castle.
Economy and events
Agriculture has been the main economic activity for the population of Annifo, which has always enjoyed a good degree of self-sufficiency. In the village, many religious events have been held since the sixteenth century, which testify to the strong religiosity of the inhabitants of the village.
The earthquake of 1997
Unfortunately, Annifo suffered a serious natural disaster in 1997 when an earthquake destroyed much of the village. Fortunately, it did not cause any casualties but it destroyed many historical buildings.
Conclusions
Annifo is an enchanted place where history, religiosity, and the atmosphere of a small village merge in a harmonious way. If you have the opportunity, come and visit these magical places immersed in nature!
