History

The name Foiano initially derived from ''Fuganum'', a Roman toponym that suggests a ''proedium Fuganum'' presumably populated by the inhabitants of San Firmiano, Vasto, San Biase, San Donato and Renzicoppa, in turn perhaps inhabited by the ancient Irpini tribe of the ''Vescellani'' mentioned by Gaio Plinio Secondo. In the sixteenth century, about 5 km from Foiano, stood an ancient and grand Benedictine Monastery, erected on the ruins of a temple to Dioscuri. Over the following centuries, the Monastery suffered numerous attacks by the bandits of Foggia, so much so that those who had to pass through the woods of ''Mazzocca'' made a will first.

It then passed under the feudal dominion of various nobles, such as the De Capitanei from Novara, the Badia of San Bartolomeo in Galdo, the Guevara, the Carafa, the Gonzaga, and the Spinelli di Buonalbergo. In 1607 it passed under the civil and criminal jurisdiction of the Jesuits of Benevento, who held it until their suppression (1773).
