Foglizzo

The History of Foglizzo

Foglizzo is an Italian municipality located in the metropolitan city of Turin, Piedmont. However, this city has an ancient history dating back to the Roman imperial era. The village was an important stop on the "Via Cursi," the fastest road leading to Gaul. Foglizzo is first mentioned in a diploma by Charles the Fat in 882 as a territory belonging to the archdiocese of Vercelli. In the Middle Ages, Foglizzo became important thanks to its location and became one of the vital centers of Canavese.

In the twelfth century, the town of Foglizzo passed into the hands of the counts of Biandrate and became one of their possessions. In 1238, the countess Isabella, widow of Count Alberto, founded the church of Foglizzo and donated it to the Canons of Sant'Egidio di Verrès. Foglizzo remained independent until 1326, when it became a vassal of the Marquisate of Monferrato. In 1631, with the Treaty of Cherasco, Foglizzo entered the Duchy of Savoy.

In 1811, the possessions of the Biandrate in Foglizzo were sold to local small farmers, giving a boost to agriculture. In 1885, the municipality of Foglizzo acquired the Castle of Foglizzo and used it as the town hall. In 1912, at the novitiate of the studentato of Foglizzo, Luigi Maria Olivares made his religious profession as a Salesian, later becoming the bishop of Sutri and Nepi and was then recognized as venerable by the Catholic Church.
