Tavernola

Tavernola: a village with an interesting history

Have you ever walked through a village and discovered truly unique places? That's exactly what happened to me when I stopped in Tavernola, a rural village located near the city of Foggia. Here, I'll tell you the story of this place, which, despite its small size, hides some interesting curiosities.

The foundation of Tavernola during the fascist period

Tavernola was founded during the fascist period, as part of the comprehensive reclamation of the Foggia plain, an area dedicated to agriculture, specifically wheat cultivation. In this context, engineer Mario Quaglini designed the rural village, constructing some buildings that, although of a rustic destination, had a certain architectural pretension. From an urban, architectural, and agricultural point of view, Tavernola was a notable example of a "rural village."

The current situation of Tavernola

Despite the beautiful projects of that era, Tavernola's expansion was interrupted by the Second World War and the end of the then-dominant ruralization program. Today, its population consists of only 87 inhabitants, over 14 kilometers away from the city center of Foggia. However, despite the time that has passed, one can still see the beauty of the village's architecture.

Curiosities about Tavernola

But it's not just the architecture that's fascinating in Tavernola. In fact, during World War II, the village became the headquarters of the 99th Bombardment Group belonging to the American Fifteenth Air Force. Given its strategic location, this could have some interesting implications to discover.

Furthermore, it's known that during the construction of the village, selected seeds were used to switch from extensive to more rational cultivation. This probably happened to meet the country's needs during a period of agriculture reorganization and development.

Tavernola: a place to discover

In conclusion, there is a lot to discover in Tavernola: a small gem in the Foggia plain that preserves the history of our country. Walking through the village's streets, one can imagine what life was like in these places during the reclamation and war period. I was particularly struck by the idea of a rural village that could be an example of agricultural and urban development.

If you happen to find yourself in Foggia, I recommend dedicating some time to discovering Tavernola and its history. I promise you won't be disappointed!
