Origins of the name: a dive into history

Fiuggi was known as Anticoli until 1911. The name Anticoli derived from the phrase "ante colles" which means "in front of the hills". In 1911 the name was changed to Fiuggi, which originally referred only to the location of the springs. The name Fiuggi comes from the Latin "fluvius", which means river or stream.

A brief history of Fiuggi

The city of Fiuggi has a long history dating back to the time of the Ernici. It is believed that a small village, called Felcia, already existed in the time of the Ernici, the Osco-Umbrian population settled in this area of Lazio. In 367 BC began the Roman domination, and the first attestations on the properties of the local waters of "Fons Arilla" date back to the Roman period.

Following the barbarian and Saracen invasions, the inhabitants moved to the nearby hill, where the historic center now stands, to defend themselves more effectively.

In the following centuries, the city was ruled by various feudal lords, including the Colonna family, who acquired the territory of Anticoli in the sixteenth century and maintained it until 1816. In 1870 with the inclusion of Lazio in the Kingdom of Italy, Anticoli became part of the Guarcino district along with other surrounding municipalities.

In 1911 the enhancement of the healing properties of the waters began, with the inauguration of the Bonifacio VIII Source. It was in the same year that the name Anticoli di Campagna was changed to Fiuggi, extending the name of the fraction that hosted the sources and that was experiencing rapid development to the entire municipality.

Conclusion

Fiuggi is a wonderful historic and thermal city that offers numerous services and facilities for those who want to enjoy a wellness vacation. Its natural springs and the mountains surrounding it make it an oasis of peace and tranquility. If you are looking for a place to relax and regenerate, Fiuggi is definitely the right choice!
