Fino Mornasco: a town with a millenary history

Welcome to Fino Mornasco, a town in the province of Como in Lombardy, with a population of approximately 9,800. In this article, we will take you on a journey through the millenary history of our city, from prehistory to modern times, passing through Roman and Lombard ages.

## Origins of the name

The name Fino Mornasco has ancient origins. "Fino" would come from the Latin "finis" which means border or limit, indicating that the place was on the border between the lands of Como and Milan. "Mornasco", instead, was added after the unification of Italy to distinguish the toponym from Fino del Monte near Bergamo. The name comes from the Brianza dialect "Mornee", which means miller, referring to the long tradition of this town linked to water mills.

## History

### Prehistory and ancient age

The territory of Fino Mornasco has a millenary history dating back to prehistory. In the Valle Mulini, in fact, some archaeological finds dating back to the early Bronze Age have been found, testifying to the presence of man on this territory since the earliest times.

Subsequently, the Fino Mornasco area also housed a fortified Roman outpost, as attested by the Roman tomb found in the hamlet of Socco, along with numerous imperial era coins found during the construction of the Saronno-Como railway and the Fino-Cadorago road.

### Middle Ages and modern age

The presence of the influence of Christianity in the current municipal territory of Fino Mornasco was certified as early as the 6th century, as shown by the funerary epigraph of 535.

In the Middle Ages, Fino Mornasco was part of the Contado del Seprio, under Lombard domination. In the 9th century, there were already mills in the Seveso valley and farms on the hills overlooking the plain. In the 14th century, there were numerous municipalities that were part of the parish of Fino, all belonging to the municipality of Fino, Andrate, Murinasio, Socho and Mondello.

During the reign of Frederick Barbarossa, the territory of Fino Mornasco was included in the Contado della Martesana, under the jurisdiction of Milan. Later, in 1152, it was ceded to the Bishop of Como Ardizzone.
