Blazonry of the coat of arms and flag

Our municipality has a very beautiful coat of arms, on a red background. You can see a silver hand grasping, moving from the tip and a shield. Under the shield, a red bifid and fluttering list, on which is written in Roman capital letters: "FIDELITAS LIBERTAS". The flag, on the other hand, is a white drapery adorned with silver embroidery and charged with the coat of arms, bearing the name of the municipality. In short, we are very proud of our visual identity!

Origin of the name

The name "Filetto" may derive from the term "Filacterion" or "Fulacterion", with which the Byzantines indicated the fortifications placed to block the strategic points of great importance. The names of other Italian localities, such as Filattiera and Filettino, may have the same Byzantine origin. Isn't it wonderful to see how history can bring out old traditions?

History

The name

According to legend, our capital could have taken its name from a medieval artifact found by a peasant with the inscription "Filius Electus" of the De Lecto family. The first settlement would have been founded by one of the sons of this family. In 1283, the diocese of Chieti reported in a document the local abbey of Santa Maria di Viano. It is said that this church was built by the Knights Templar. In 1296, the feudal lordship was owned by Bertrande Bens of Provence, then passed to the Aragonese and Spanish dynasties.

Middle Ages and Modern Era

The origins of Filetto date back to the construction of the fortified village above a tiny settlement, of which walls in opus reticulatum are preserved, near Colle dei Saraceni. It is said that in the countryside between Filetto and Casacanditella, a peasant found a stamp reproduced with a ship, and the inscription "ROMA OMNIBUS FELICIOR". Of course, it cannot be known for sure, but some speculate that the stamp may come from an abbey that existed in the area.
