The municipality was established on January 1, 2014, from the merger of the municipalities of Figline Valdarno and Incisa in Val d'Arno, and is mainly composed of these two inhabited centers.

Origin of the name

The name "Figline and Incisa Valdarno" derives from the combination of the names of the two previous municipalities in alphabetical order. "Figline" takes its name from the factories of figulines (terracotta objects) that were located in the area, while "Incisa" derives from the splitting of the earth's crust that formed near Incisa.

History

The symbols of the municipality, namely the coat of arms and the gonfalon, were granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 2015. The gonfalon consists of a white flag with a red border.

Society

The municipality has a population of about 23,000 inhabitants, including a foreign community represented mainly by Romanians, Albanians, Moroccans, and Chinese.

Anthropogenic Geography

The municipality consists mainly of the two inhabited centers of Figline Valdarno and Incisa in Val d'Arno, but it is also possible to find 9 officially recognized hamlets: Porcellino, Restone, Cesto, Gaville, Ponte agli Stolli, Brollo, Burchio, Palazzolo, and Poggio alla Croce. The latter is a hilly center located on the top of the Chianti Fiorentino, administratively divided between the municipality of Figline and Incisa Valdarno and that of Greve in Chianti.
