Territory
Fiesso d'Artico is a municipality of 8,433 inhabitants located in the metropolitan city of Venice, in the easternmost part of the Brenta Riviera. Its territory was originally larger and was divided into two parts: the Comun Grande di Fiesso and the Comun Piccolo Fiessetto.
History
The territory of Fiesso d'Artico was involved in many wars that affected the city of Padua, being very close to it. The territory belonged to the town of Padua until the 15th century when it definitively passed to the Republic of Venice. Since then, Fiesso d'Artico has been adorned with magnificent Venetian villas, summer residences of nobles and wealthy Venetian merchants. Many of them still exist and are inhabited today.
In 1806, following the advent of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy, the municipality of Fiesso assumed the title of Municipio. In 1867, the municipality of Fiesso was renamed "Fiesso d'Artico," in honor of the Water Magistrate Angelo Maria Artico, who designed a final and definitive diversion of the Brenta River to safeguard the town from flooding.
In the 1960s, the footwear sector developed in Fiesso, which still stands out internationally for its quality and style. The years of the Italian economic miracle brought a wave of progressive prosperity and cultural effervescence to the town; in the 1970s, bands like Pfm, Uriah Heep, and Roxy Music performed in Fiesso.
In 2002, Fiesso d'Artico, together with the municipality of Dolo, formed the union of municipalities Riviera del Brenta. Later, the municipalities of Fossò and Campagna Lupia also joined.
