Ferrera Erbognone

Ferrera Erbognone: a commune in southern Lomellina

Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about Ferrera Erbognone, a commune in the province of Pavia, in the beautiful region of Lombardy.

History

Ferrera Erbognone has a very ancient and fascinating history. It has always been linked to the nearby Sannazzaro de' Burgondi, probably belonging to the noble Sannazzaro family since around 1000. In 1250 it was listed in the lands belonging to Pavia; it then followed the fate of the Sannazzaro fiefdom, lordship of the Malaspina starting from 1466. Ferrera remained united to the commune of Sannazzaro until the beginning of the 17th century, becoming autonomous around the mid-century. In 1806, the commune of Cascina Confalonera was merged with Ferrera. In 1863, it was named Ferrera Erbognone.

Symbols

The coat of arms of Ferrera Erbognone comes from the coat of arms of the feudal family of Malaspina di Alagna, and the banner is divided into red and blue halves vertically with the shield and the arms of the commune, with the name of the commune on top.

Monuments and places of interest

The Cascine

Cascina Confalonera is a large farmstead located northwest of Ferrera; it was a commune in the 18th century, called "Cascina Confalonera con Cascina Ardizzi." Cascina Ardizzi (later called Casalino, which constitutes the eastern part of the current Confalonera) was an older place, already mentioned as a commune in the 17th century and at the beginning of the next century. Confalonera later prevailed and today the name indicates both Cascina.

Ancient icehouse

The ancient icehouse is one of the last remaining in these rural places; this structure was used to contain pieces of ice and food, thanks to the freshness of the environment.

Society

Demographic evolution

Ferrera Erbognone currently has 1063 inhabitants and has experienced a gradual decrease in population in recent years.

Infrastructure and transport

Between 1884 and 1933, the locality was reachable through a stop on a tramway route along the Mortara-Ottobiano-Pieve del Cairo tramway. Currently, it is served by the Ferrera Lomellina station, located on the Pavia-Alessandria railway. Furthermore, Ferrera Erbognone hosts Italy's largest supercomputer, Eni's High-Performance Computing, and one of the most important refineries in Europe, also owned by the Eni group. It includes the ENI EST plant (ENI Slurry Technology), a technology licensed entirely by ENI and capable of treating heavy fuels while maximizing the production of light fuels (diesel, gasoline). The plant was entirely established within the commune of Ferrera Erbognone.

Ferrera Erbognone is a quiet and beautiful place, immersed in nature and surrounded by monuments and places of interest. If you happen to be passing through the area, do not hesitate to visit the Lomellina commune and admire its historical and landscape beauties!
