Cocomaro di Focomorto: a dive into Ferrara's history

Hello friends, today I want to tell you about a location east of Ferrara called Cocomaro di Focomorto. Those who know the history of the city know that this area has great historical and cultural significance. Let's discover together the curiosities of this place, which will leave you enchanted.

History of Cocomaro di Focomorto

The history of Cocomaro begins in the distant year of 904, when its name was "Val di Zucche e Val di Cuccula". In the following years, the village was mentioned in several historical documents, including the citation of its church, dating back to 1141 and dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari.

Unfortunately, in 1642, the church collapsed and was only rebuilt many years later by the Olivetan Congregation of the Basilica of San Giorgio fuori le mura. In 1790, the baroque-style bell tower was rebuilt, which today represents one of the most visited monuments in the village.

The tragic war also involved Cocomaro in the partisan conflict: on the night of August 11-12, 1944, seven partisans were shot at the monumental cemetery of the Certosa di Ferrara as reprisal.
