Cona
Cona: a hamlet of Ferrara
Hello everyone! Today I will tell you about Cona, a hamlet of Ferrara located about 10 kilometers from the city. The hamlet has 1118 inhabitants and is part of the Circoscrizioni of Ferrara.
History of Cona
The toponym Cona derives from the Greek word that indicates a curve, a breast or a square on hydrographic maps. However, some think that the name may derive from the point where the Po river divided into two branches. The name of Cona has been known since 1183.
In the territory of Cona, along the course of the Po di Volano, stood the church of San Giovanni Battista di Ferrara, which was destroyed by the earthquake of 1570. The monks of the Olivetan Benedictine Congregation of San Giorgio, who officiated the church, used the foresteria of San Sinesio in 1573 and built the new church in Baroque style.
Cona is located between the Raccordo autostradale 8 and via Pomposa and has a railway station along the railway line Ferrara-Codigoro. In the past, the locality was also served by a Ferrara-Codigoro tramway.
Places of interest
Near Cona there is the Arcispedale Sant'Anna di Ferrara, which replaced the former city hospital located in Corso della Giovecca.
Another place of interest is Villa Magnoni, an ancient noble residence. Although it is now in a state of abandonment, it still retains traces of frescoes in some rooms.
Notes and Bibliography
If you want to deepen your knowledge of Cona, I recommend reading the "Guida del ferrarese" by Ugo Malagù published in 1982.
