Casaglia

The story of Casaglia

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Casaglia, a beautiful hamlet in the municipality of Ferrara, located in Emilia-Romagna. The name of the village derives from "casalie", which means a small group of houses. It falls within the Ferrara district and its history is fascinating.

The origins of Casaglia date back to the road on which it stands, already mentioned in the Ferrara Statutes of 1287. The village is located in the homonymous Polesine, born from the new bed of the Po river, which was taking shape in this land after the Ficarolo flood of 1152.

This village is often mentioned in the lists of Po floods, and particularly violent ones occurred in 1419, when its territory was completely invaded by waters, then in 1627, when the flood severely damaged the Este hunting lodge, which was already in a state of neglect due to the departure of the Este to Modena, and finally in 1705, when the waters reached the gates of Ferrara.

In 1955, the flood disaster was avoided, when the right bank of the Po collapsed in the Marconcina area due to the excessive lowering of the river waters. This event was followed by the repair of the embankments, which would have risked collapsing even with normal flooding. As a result of this intervention, the surrounding countryside was able to enjoy a rapid productive recovery, particularly based on fruit growing.

What to see in Casaglia

Now let's move on to the places of interest to visit in Casaglia. You can admire the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore in Ferrara, built around 1460 at the behest of Borso d'Este. The church represents a precious treasure trove of works of art, including an extraordinary cycle of frescoes that are fully preserved.

In addition, you can visit the Delizia della Diamantina, an ancient residence and hunting lodge of the Este, which over time became a private residence and partly a museum of peasant civilization. The structure is very well preserved and from its position dominates a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside.
