History

Ferno has a rich and fascinating history. Our municipal coat of arms, recognized by the decree of the head of government on June 9, 1937, represents the city's colors, while the gonfalon, granted by the decree of the President of the Republic on January 10, 1985, is a split banner of red and blue.

Ferno: art, culture and transport in the heart of Lombardy

Monuments and places of interest

If you love art and culture, you cannot miss the Volandia Park and Museum, the largest aviation museum in Italy and one of the largest in Europe, located between the municipalities of Somma Lombardo and Ferno. The complex is located on the site of the historic Caproni 1910 workshops and houses a collection of more than 100 aircraft on approximately 250,000 square meters of museum space.

For a relaxing walk, we recommend visiting the Mulino, which has a plant derived from that typical of farmsteads, with five rooms used as housing, a large porch for loading and unloading goods, stables, and mills. Among all the existing mills on the Lombard shore, it is undoubtedly the one that best represented the structure of the milling typology.

If, on the other hand, you are passionate about religious buildings, you cannot miss the church of Santa Maria Assunta in campagna, the oldest building in the village, built in Romanesque style in the fourteenth century and expanded in the sixteenth century; the church features various medieval frescoes. In addition, the church of San Martino dates back to the late seventeenth century, with a simple and sober architecture and an altar in marble with a canvas by an anonymous artist depicting Saint Martin who gives his cloak to a beggar.

Society

The demographic evolution of Ferno is very interesting, with a constant demographic growth over time. Our town is a welcoming place, where families and businesses feel at home.

Infrastructure and transportation

Ferno is famous for its Malpensa International Airport, which covers a good part of our territory. Moreover, the Ferno-Lonate Pozzolo station, located along the Busto Arsizio-Malpensa Airport railway, is served by regional connections carried out by Trenord within the service contract stipulated with the Lombardy Region.

Between 1933 and 1951, Ferno was served by a branch line from Gallarate of the Milan-Gallarate tramway, managed by STIE.

Conclusions

Come and discover Ferno and its history, the aviation museum, and the ancient churches! We are sure you will not regret it!
