Fermo is situated on a hill called Colle Sàbulo. The Cathedral located at the top of the hill dominates the city. Fermo is divided into two parts: the historical part, which has remained almost intact over the centuries, and a new part.

Territory

The territory of Fermo is quite large and has several areas beyond the Tenna River. To the south of the municipality there is a beautiful 8 km long beach, while to the north there are other beaches such as Lido di Fermo, Casabianca and Lido San Tommaso.

Climate

Fermo has a Mediterranean climate, with moderate temperatures and a lot of rain especially in autumn and winter.

Origins of the name

The name "Fermo" seems to derive from the Latin adjective "firmus", which means "faithful" or "from certain boundaries". There are also other hypotheses that indicate a origin from the Sabine "Perwom" or from the Etruscan "Permu".

History

Fermo has a very interesting history. Archaeological excavations have shown that the city existed already in the 9th and 8th centuries BC, belonging to the Etruscan civilization. The city then had a great importance during the Roman period and participated in several military campaigns. At the end of the 90 BC, its inhabitants obtained Roman citizenship.

The city was also one of the main cities of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and played an important role during the Italian Risorgimento.
