Mentoulles is a small village situated at approximately 1050 meters above sea level, on the sunny side of the Val Chisone. The hamlet of Villecloze is located just above the village, at an altitude of around 1100 meters. Continuing uphill, there are the hamlets of Fondufaux at 1250 meters, La Latta at 1400 meters, and L'Arà at 1500 meters. On the opposite side of the valley lies the hamlet of Granges, while the village of Chambons is just a few kilometers away towards Fenestrelle.

Mentoulles has a very ancient history dating back to the 11th century, when it was part of the Marca di Torino and the valley belonged to the diocese of Turin. In 1064, Marchesa Adelaide of Susa and her sister donated to the monastery of Abbadia Alpina, which also included several properties in the upper valley, including Mentoulles. In 1078, the Church of Mentoulles was founded, also by Adelaide. In the 12th century, political power in the valley passed to the Dauphins of Viennois who progressively expanded towards the Alps, becoming protectors of the prepositura of Oulx and lords of the territories where the prepositura had its churches, including Mentoulles.
