Vellai
Welcome to Vellai!
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Vellai, a small hamlet in Veneto situated in Feltre. You will be surprised to know that I spent my childhood here, and I still often come back to visit this charming area.
Physical Geography
Vellai is a small hamlet, but its territory is vast and has so much to offer. On one side, there are the countryside surrounding the town, dotted with other small urban settlements. On the other, there are several wetland areas, including the Torbiera di Lipoi, where nature and tranquility find expression. The Uniera and Caorame rivers are two natural elements that give this area a touch of beauty and serenity.
Origins of the Name
Little is known about the name Vellai, but it is possible that it derives from an ancient proper name, Vel, and the suffix -ai, characteristic of the Feltrino area. According to a will of 1610, the town is referred to as Vellai, but in a map of 1798 it is indicated as "Velai". Popular belief traces the name back to the word "vello", referring to the woolen coat that covers the Ovis: although it is not correct from a philological point of view, this story is suggestive and testifies to the ancient pastoral tradition of the place.
History
Like many areas of Italy, Vellai also has a long and complex history. There are many mysteries surrounding the past of this area, but it is known that its proximity to the ''Feltria-Bellunum'', the Roman road that connected the two main inhabited centers of Valbelluna, allowed the development of the town. In the Middle Ages, the events of Vellai were linked to the Pezzol Castle, a construction located near the Caorame river. In the past, the castle was owned by the Pezzolo family, which fell into poverty due to a conspiracy against the Serenese bishop Adalgerio Villalta, in 1265.
