Ponte nelle Alpi, the municipality of Belluno

Hello everyone! Today we'll talk about Ponte nelle Alpi, a charming municipality in the province of Belluno in Veneto. The municipal seat is located not in the town itself, but in the Cadola hamlet. The municipal territory extends on both banks of the Piave river and is characterized by a mountainous landscape with an altitude ranging from 378 to 2,133 meters.

Physical geography

The municipality is divided into three areas: the Right Piave (with Ponte nelle Alpi, Polpet, and Pian di Vedoia), the Left Piave or Coi de Pera (with numerous hamlets, including the municipal seat of Cadola), and Oltrerai (with Soccher, Arsiè, Paiane, Casan, and Reveane).

History

Ponte nelle Alpi boasts ancient origins dating back to the Stone Age. However, during the Roman era, there were important signs of a stable presence that mainly concentrated near Losego and Polpet. In the Middle Ages, three fortifications were built to defend the three valleys in the area. The connecting bridge over the Piave, from which the municipality takes its name, was destroyed by the Serenissima in 1412 but was immediately rebuilt. Over the next two centuries, it was rebuilt and destroyed for a total of five times. The municipality's gonfalon is a red drape.

Monuments and places of interest

Ponte nelle Alpi is rich in monuments and places of interest. Among the religious architectures present in the municipality, the Church of Santa Maria del Rosario stands out, located in Cadola. The current church, built in 1862 according to a design by Giuseppe Segusini, preserves works of great artistic value, including the canvases by Cesare Vecellio and Francesco Frigimelica the Elder. In the Monte Frusseda area, instead, you can find the Church of Sant'Andrea, dating back to the 12th century and equipped with a beautiful cycle of frescoes, unfortunately damaged by vandals.

If you have the opportunity, do not hesitate to visit Ponte nelle Alpi and discover all its hidden treasures among the mountains!
