The Belluno-Feltre-Treviso railway

The Belluno-Feltre-Treviso railway is an Italian railway line that connects the city of Belluno to Treviso. Crossing the Piave valley, the railway connects different locations in the Veneto region. The passenger service, regional and long-distance, is provided by Trenitalia, while the line is managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana.

History

The Belluno-Feltre-Treviso railway was built between 1884 and 1886 by the Italian Company for Southern Railways and later passed to Ferrovie dello Stato in 1906. Until 1955, the Bribano-Agordo railway, inaugurated in 1925 for the transport of passengers, but mostly for pyrite minerals from the Agordo mines, branched off from the Sedico-Bribano station.

Electrification

In 2019, the missing funds for the electrification of the entire line from Treviso to Belluno were allocated. Construction works began on the Belluno-Feltre section and, from 2021, will extend to the Feltre-Montebelluna section. Completion of the works is scheduled for the end of 2025.

Characteristics

The Belluno-Feltre-Treviso railway is a single-track and thermal traction line. Until 2011, traffic was regulated by the Central Operations Manager (DCO), but it was subsequently transferred to the Venice Mestre station. The line is operated with Centralized Traffic Control with automatic electric interlocking with axle counting and ACEI, especially of the simplified type (I 0/19).

Rolling stock

The line was traversed by trains pulled by steam locomotives and then by railcars. In the 1970s, trains were operated by FS ALn 772 railcars, and for the Freccia delle Dolomiti, ALn 448 railcars were used. Later, FS ALn 773 railcars with trailers arrived, and FS D.345 locomotives replaced steam locomotives. In the 1980s, FS ALn 668 railcars and shuttle trains pulled by FS D diesel locomotives arrived.

The Belluno-Feltre-Treviso railway is a historical line that crosses the Veneto region, connecting important cities and locations. The electrification of the railway, currently underway, represents an important step towards improving passenger service and freight transport, contributing to the development of the area.
