The History of Favara

From a historical point of view, Favara has ancient origins. The first human traces date back to the late Copper Age when red monochrome ceramics were produced. In Hellenistic times, the city was dominated by the Greeks, and traces of their influence are still present in the city. Later, in the 8th century, the Normans built the Chiaramonte fortress, now also known as the Medieval Palace. In the 16th century, the city experienced a great demographic development thanks to the De Marinis family.

In the post-reunification period until 1883, the city was dominated by a mafia clan, known as the Brotherhood of Favara. Unfortunately, on May 16, 1946, the city's mayor, Gaetano Guarino, was brutally assassinated.

Finally, the city has had the dubious recognition of naming streets after two people still alive: Juan Manuel Fangio in 1994 and Carlo Bo in 1999.
