Farnese

Welcome to Palazzo Farnese, a Mannerist gem in the heart of Lazio

We are delighted to introduce you to Palazzo Farnese, located in the medieval town of Caprarola, just a few kilometers from Viterbo in Lazio. Built for the powerful Farnese family, the palace represents one of the finest examples of Mannerist residences of the time. Managed by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, the palace is part of the Italian national museums.

The history behind Palazzo Farnese

Palazzo Farnese was designed as a defensive residence by Cardinal Pope Paul III and entrusted to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger in 1530. However, the project was interrupted by Sangallo's death in 1546. Cardinal Alessandro Farnese the Younger resumed his grandfather's project and assigned the construction to Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola in 1547. Vignola transformed the original fortified castle into an imposing Renaissance palace, which became the summer residence of the Cardinal and his court. The best painters and architects of the time worked inside the palace, creating frescoes inspired by the literary figure Annibal Caro.

The garden of Palazzo Farnese

The garden of Palazzo Farnese is another wonder not to be missed during the visit. With its terraced layout behind the residence, the garden is an example of a late Renaissance garden. The work on the garden began in 1565 by Giacomo Del Duca and was completed only in 1630, under the direction of Girolamo Rainaldi.

The architectural features of Palazzo Farnese

The architectural features of Palazzo Farnese are fascinating. Architect Vignola inserted broad terraces open towards the surrounding countryside, replacing the corner bastions of the original fortification. In the center of the residence, a two-story circular courtyard was built, with the upper floor set slightly back. Vignola cut the hill with staircases in order to isolate the palace and, at the same time, integrate it harmoniously with the surrounding territory.
