The origin of the name and history of Groppallo
The name of Barsi, a settlement dependent on Groppallo, derives from the Gallic word "Barro", which means "height". Even the name of Groppallo, although having its origin in the ancient Ligurian language, recalls a similar concept, meaning "rounded summit". The history of Groppallo dates back to the Lombard era (6th-7th century), when Mount Castellaro was a military outpost with an anti-Byzantine function. Subsequently, in the 12th century, a castle belonging to the noble family Gropallo was erected on the summit of the mountain, which had sovereignty over the entire Groppallo territory. In the 14th century, the Groppallo area passed into the hands of the Nicelli family, who boasted numerous possessions throughout the valley. In the 15th century, the parish was transferred to the top of Mount Castellaro and the dedication was changed from Antonino di Piacenza Martire to the Blessed Virgin Mary Assumed into Heaven. Currently, Groppallo is part of the municipality of Farini d'Olmo.
Monuments and places of interest
The church of the Blessed Virgin Assunta, located on the top of Mount Castellaro, is one of the main monuments of Groppallo. Originally built around the 15th century, the church was rebuilt between 1913 and 1918 and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the valley below.
