Fanano

Welcome to Fanano!

Hello everyone! Today we'll talk about Fanano, a beautiful town located in the Alto Frignano area in Emilia-Romagna, south of Modena. With its 2941 inhabitants, it's the largest municipality in the region and much of its territory is part of the Alto Appennino Modenese regional park. Fanano is a member of the Frignano municipality union, with its capital in Pavullo nel Frignano.

History

Fanano's history dates back to the 8th century, with evidence of Etruscan and Liguri Friniates inhabiting the area. It is believed that the name derived from a deformation of Fannianus, the landowner's name. During the late Middle Ages, there were many opposing families organized in two different factions. During the Lombard era, San Colombano founded a monastery that later became a Benedictine order thanks to the work of Saint Anselm of Nonantola. In the town center, we can still find a church dedicated to the Irish saint. In the 13th century, a Franciscan convent was founded and in the 18th century, Don Giovanni Battista Lolli erected a Cappuccine monastery.

The Fountain and Aqueduct

One of Fanano's main attractions is the main fountain in the town, located in Corsini Square in the historic center. It was built from 1912 to 1913 based on a design by Lapo Farinati degli Uberti, a young architect from the nearby town of Cutigliano. The aqueduct, which replaced the old system that could no longer supply water to all residents, was also designed by the same architect who designed the fountain. The sources that supply water to the system are located in the Fellicarolo area of Rovina Rasa and were donated by Dr. Camillo Monari.

Fanano's Territory

Fanano's territory is vast and varied. Its altitude ranges from 600 to 2165 meters above sea level, and visitors can find enchanting landscapes, beech and fir forests, lakes, and streams. Fanano is also a popular destination for both summer and winter hiking and offers various sporting activities. The Alto Appennino Modenese regional park, of which much of the territory is a part, offers many opportunities for hiking enthusiasts and biodiverse insights. Additionally, Fanano is famous for the Teatro di Carta festival, a puppet festival that takes place every year during the Christmas period.

Gastronomy

Finally, we cannot talk about Fanano without mentioning its delicious cuisine! In particular, we recommend trying the malga cheese, lasagna with meat sauce, strozzapreti with mushroom sauce, tortellini with meat sauce, and fried crescenta. There are no words to describe the goodness of these typical dishes, so we invite you to try them!
