Origin of the name
The name Falvaterra seems to derive from the Roman city of Fabrateria. This city was located near the current position of Falvaterra. During the pre-Roman period, the territory of Falvaterra was inhabited by indigenous populations, and traces of their polygonal walls have been found in the area of Castellone inside the Grotte di Falvaterra e Rio Obaco.
History
Falvaterra has a very ancient origin, dating back to the Roman era. In 125 BC, the Romans founded "Fabrateria nova" on the right bank of the river Liri, shortly after its confluence with the Sacco river. This settlement was created after the destruction of the Roman city of Fregellae.
Through the centuries, Falvaterra was ruled by the most powerful families of the time, such as the de Ceccano, the Pagani di Falvaterra, the Caetani, and, for a brief period, the Borgia. However, the Colonna family constituted one of the reasons for the war of 1556 between the Pope and the King of Spain.
During World War II, Falvaterra hosted many displaced people from nearby towns in search of shelter from Allied bombings and Nazi violence. Some inhabitants of the village organized a civil resistance action against the Nazis in January 1944.
