Faleria: History, Monuments, and Natural Beauty in Lazio.

Territory

Faleria is located about 40 kilometers from Rome, on the left of the Via Flaminia. It is included in the Tiber valley, between the municipalities of Rignano, Calcata and Civita Castellana. If you look up, you will see Mount Soratte to the east and the Cimini and Sabatini Mountains to the west. The municipal area, crossed by the Treja river, is not part of the homonymous regional park, but joins the Tiber after a few kilometers.

Climate

Classified in zone D, Faleria has an average temperature of 13.4 degrees and is mainly influenced by the Mediterranean climate.

History

Inhabited territory since ancient times, Faleria has ancient origins. Its first name was Stabbia, which then changed to Castrum Stabie. In 1873 it adopted the current name, although recently there has been talk of a possible return to the old name.

Although scholars do not agree on its etymology, it is known that Stabbia was the name of a station located along an Etruscan or Roman road, of which today the so-called Stabbia inn remains on the Via Flaminia.

Although in the past it was considered a fiefdom, already in the 14th century Stabbia belonged to the Anguillara family, which owned it until the 17th century. An important date in the history of the municipality is November 1, 1504, the day on which Girolama Farnese, wife of Giuliano Anguillara, was assassinated, suspected of having attempted to poison her son with the help of her lovers.
