Santa Maria del Rosario: the church of Errano

If you're looking to discover a hidden gem in the municipality of Faenza, the church of Santa Maria del Rosario is definitely worth a visit.

History

The history of this church dates back to the 12th century when it was a chapel dedicated to Mary located in a different site from its current location. In 1478, the name Errano first appeared in a will that provided money to build a "chapel in the church of Santa Maria in Erano." By 1475, the chapel had become a parish church, thanks to Bishop Federico Manfredi. In the area, there was also the San Giovanni Battista hospital, intended to accommodate orphans and pilgrims who were heading to Rome. In 1783, the 12th-century church was destroyed by an earthquake, and in its place, the church of Santa Maria del Rosario was built.

Santa Maria del Rosario in Errano: a little sacred art gem.

Description

The exterior of the church is pleasing to the senses and communicates with the sacristy and rectory rooms. The facade stands out for elements that recall neoclassical architecture styles, such as the triangular pediment surmounted by the cross and the Doric order pilasters. The belfry has three bells and a cross on top. The interior is characterized by the central nave, two rooms on either side of the altar, and an elevated balcony for the choir. Although it is a simple and small church, it houses numerous valuable works of art. On the left is a painting depicting the Madonna delle Grazie, protector of Faenza, with Saint Peter and Saint Francis bowing down to her. On the right side, a small altar features a statue of the Virgin holding the baby Jesus in her arms and a rosary in her hand. The Sacred Heart of Jesus altar, on the other hand, is on the right. The 17th-century Via Crucis consists of 14 stations, made using the chalcography technique and hung on the side walls. The canvas painting of Saint John the Baptist, attributed to the workshop of Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, is located in front of the choir balcony.
