Vibo Valentia: the magnificent city of the Coast of the Gods

History

Vibo Valentia corresponds to the ancient Hipponion, an important city of Magna Graecia. It later became a colony of the Roman Empire, known as Valentia. In the Middle Ages, it was fortified by the Byzantine emperors and then passed under Norman control. The city of Monteleone was the capital of Calabria Ulteriore from 1582 to 1593 and then again from 1806 to 1816.

What to Visit

One of the most iconic places in Vibo Valentia is the Norman-Swabian Castle, which dominates the city from above. Its origins date back to the 11th century but it has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. Walking through the old town, you will find other treasures such as the Church of San Francesco di Paola, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Porta Sirena, an ancient entrance to the old town. Furthermore, Vibo Valentia is famous for its thermal baths, the Terme di Caronte, where you can enjoy a moment of relaxation surrounded by nature.

Local Cuisine

A holiday in Vibo Valentia is not complete without trying the typical dishes of Calabrian cuisine. Don't miss the chance to try nduja, a spicy and creamy sausage, piadina with soppressata, fusilli with 'nduja and eggplant, red onions from Tropea and many other typical products of the region.

Climate

The summer climate in Vibo Valentia is never too hot, barely exceeding 30 °C, but it is humid and muggy. On the coast, temperatures can reach up to 35 °C but with a much lower level of humidity. The climate is pleasant, never too cold and often allows for sunny days reaching up to 20 °C.

Vibo Valentia is therefore an excellent destination for those seeking sun and peace, history and culture. A city to discover, rich in history and natural beauty, where the traditions of the local populations blend perfectly with the influences of centuries of internal and external history, creating a unique and unrepeatable mix.
