San Donato
Discover the history of San Donato
Hello everyone! Today I will tell you about San Donato, a beautiful hamlet in the municipality of Fabriano, located in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region. San Donato is about twenty minutes from the center of Fabriano and is located at an altitude of 499 meters above sea level.
The history of San Donato
According to historical tradition, the first settlement in San Donato dates back to the refugees from Sentinum who settled there in the 5th century. In the Middle Ages, San Donato became a county of Nocera Umbra and, starting from 1203, began to submit to Fabriano. In 1222, the lands of San Donato were sold by Peregrino di Girardo to the municipality of Fabriano.
San Donato was very important for the defense of the northeastern sector of Fabriano. It was besieged, destroyed and rebuilt several times. Currently, you can still see the remains of the castle that once was there, a bit rundown but very fascinating.
Monuments and places of interest
In San Donato there is a very important religious building: the church of San Donato. This church is ancient and is mentioned in a document of the Cathedral of San Venanzio in Fabriano from 1534. Unfortunately, during the Second World War, the church was destroyed by the Germans, but was subsequently rebuilt. Today, the church represents a very suggestive and peaceful place of worship.
Notes
In conclusion, I can say that San Donato is a very interesting place for anyone who is passionate about history and medieval architecture. Here you can observe the remains of the castle, visit the church of San Donato and appreciate the beauty of the surrounding territory. I recommend taking a walk along the narrow streets of the village and breathing the atmosphere that surrounds you.
