The history of Erba

The origin of the various villages that later originated Erba is quite ancient. The place was in fact inhabited in epochs before the Roman one, and the Orobi, the Ligurians, and the Celts alternated there, but above all, the latter left their customs there. During Roman history, both the "via Mediolanum-Bellasium", which connected Milan to Bellagio, and the road that, from Aquileia, passing through Como, led to Rhaetia, passed through "Herba," the Latin name for Erba.

During the struggles between the Communal Age and the Holy Roman Empire, the inhabitants of Erba sided with Milan, obtaining citizenship in 1160. From the 13th century to the 16th century, the territory of the current municipality of Erba constituted part of the lordship of the Visconti first and the Sforza later.

In the 19th century, Napoleon Bonaparte's government launched a first experience of union with Incino and Crevenna, lasting only seven years, and was annulled by the Austrians in 1816. During the House of Habsburg period, the area was an important holiday center in Brianza, as evidenced by numerous patrician villas that still exist.
