Eraclea has an ancient history, with traces of Venetian settlements predating the Romans. It was an important commercial center for the Adriatic area and hosted the center of Heraclia (also known as Melidissa, Heracliana, and Civitas Nova) from the period of barbarian invasions until the 12th century. It was one of the major cities of the Venetian Lagoon and briefly the capital of the Duchy of Venice.
